A Heart For Our Community!

Despite a nice and suitably grim-faced photo in the Twyford Times (19th July) I would just like to say that I personally do not consider Twyford to be dying. I believe that the general sentiment at the Public Meeting last week was a positive "look how great this could be for the village!". The article does refer to the various groups such as the over 60's club, the art group and the local history society (to name but a few!) who pointed out the benefits of a library and central community facility allowing their organisations to reach out to the wider community.
It is true that the J W Greens site in its current state does not reflect well on Twyford, and as the sub-heading in the Twyford Times says - we will fight on!

  • Can someone please tell me where the J W Greens site is. Thanks!

  • J W Green's bar is the now vacant and boarded up pub next door to the Off-Licence and along from the Post Office & Chemist in the High Street. There is a covered alleyway that leads up the side of J W Green's and through a carpark leading to the entrance to Waitrose. With a lick of paint and some nice murals on the walls this alleyway could be totally transformed!

  • ...I forgot to say - it's right in the centre of Twyford!!! An ideal location for a library :-)

  • Have the council not thought about renting out unused office/storage space within the JWGreens building? Surely small businesses would be interested in the premises and this would generate income to help pay towards the project, and make the purchase more viable in the long term?

  • I think Twyford is an evolving village - soon to be a town: there are no independent bakers for example, and the population is ever increasing due to the SE over-development plan. The village feel of the place is only being retained by it's residents, which is how it should be. Hopefully this will rub off on new people as they move in. A central library, with a coffee bar and various groups running will help this to happen. And a note to WDC, since when did a public service need to be 'value for money'? Since they got judged as being too expensive to be important? If it's done carefully, listening to the voice of the community in Twyford, there's no reason as to why an eyesore shouldn't become a flourishing beauty!
