Petition of 739 Signatures Presented to WDC

After a fantastic effort by the whole community gathering signatures over just one week, a petition of 739 signatures was presented to Cllr Dianne King, Executive Officer for Community Development, at the Wokingham District Council meeting on Thursday 27th July. When added to the 600 signatures presented to the council by the Twyford Advertiser in February this brings the running total to 1339 people in support of moving Twyford library to J W Greens.

The petition was presented by Norman Raybone, Chairman of SCOF, Senior Citizens Open Forum for the Northern Parishes, who said:

"Twyford library is unsuitable for its purpose and unable to satisfy the needs of the community.

"This second petition is from more than 739 people of all ages and political persuasions; it is a response to a rare opportunity to take over an existing premise in the centre of the village, on a site adjacent to a superstore that has a footfall of thousands of customers per week and in a village that continues to grow.

"It is a situation that would ensure a good return on the District Council’s investment and favour the growth of business activity in the village centre.

"The site is at the hub of the northern parishes; it is accessible to all and could become a multi use facility benefiting people of all ages, from childhood and through the increasing number of years that we can expect to lead an active life. It could be a continual source of lifetime learning and support.

"A community library at the centre of Twyford would provide an educational and cultural resource that has been lacking in the northern parishes. One that would be comparable with those provided elsewhere in the District."
